2011 Top 100: Apparel, Accessories and Footwear

12/15/2011
VF Corporation
In September 2011, VF Corporation announced an acquisition that helped it become a $10 billion apparel and footwear powerhouse anchored in outdoor and action sports. With its takeover of The Timberland Company, VF expects to add $700 million to revenues in 2011. Accompanying the deal was a new leadership structure: Patrik Frisk was named President of Timberland; Richard O’Rourke continues as Senior Vice President, International; and Mark Satkiewcz will lead Smartwool America (a Timberland brand) as President.

PVH Corp.

After acquiring the Tommy Hilfiger brand in March of 2010 for $3 billion, PVH Corp. realized a 93 percent boost in its 2010 sales. The Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands alone represent more than 75 percent of the company’s revenues and profits. Thus, in an effort to reflect the company’s evolution, Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation changed its name to PVH Corp. In a June 2011 press release, Emanuel Chirico, chairman and CEO of PVH Corp., said, “We evolved from a family-controlled, one brand manufacturing company into a Fortune 500 company by successfully growing brands globally through a strategic combination of wholesale, retail and licensing operations. The formal adoption of the ‘PVH Corp.’ name is symbolic of this transformation, while maintaining a link to our heritage.”

Liz Claiborne Inc.

It will be interesting to see how Liz Claiborne Inc. ranks next year after all of the changes the company experienced in the latter half of 2011. For example, the company entered into definitive agreements to sell the worldwide rights for the Liz Claiborne family of brands as well as the U.S. and Puerto Rico rights for the Monet brand to J.C. Penney Company Inc. for $267.5 million. Meanwhile, the company completed the sale of the Dana Buchman brand to Kohl’s, and agreed to sell the Kensie, Kensiegirl and Mac & Jac brands to affiliates of Bluestar Alliance. Liz Claiborne Inc. is exploring options for a new corporate name that will better reflect its focus on building and growing three global lifestyle brands — Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand and kate spade.
