Downstream Data Sharing: What's Your Status?

In 2010, a breakthrough new report from CGT and RIS News proved that downstream data is a key initiative for consumer goods companies and retailers alike. However, for a variety of reasons, including cost, overly complicated processes and technology challenges, the promise of benefits had still not been realized industry-wide. Key findings include:

- Nearly one-quarter of supplier respondents receive data daily from at least one retailer, and 22 percent receive such data from more than 10 retailers.

- In contrast, 31 percent of retailer respondents don't share data daily with any of heir suppliers.

- Lower inventory and safety stock levels leads the list of data sharing benefits for retailers at 38 percent.

- 51 percent of supplier respondents consider improving on-shelf availability as the top data sharing benefit, followed closely by better demand forecast accuracy at 47 percent.

- Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Target, Walgreens and Kroger were identified by supplier respondents as the top five data sharing retailers.

- On the other hand,retail respondents identified Kraft Foods, Procter & Gamble and Samsung as the top data sharing suppliers.

This year, we are polling both trading partners again to determine how much head way has been made in data sharing adoption, benefits, and the collaborative relationship behind data-powered implementations.
