Is Your Company Being Targeted As THE Cause of Obesity?

7/22/2014
With so many Americans looking for the cause of obesity, food and beverage companies are taking the ‘heat’ and the blame. Activist groups and individuals are targeting companies and products as THE reason that obesity exists. While we know healthy eating is essential for living a healthy life, there is much more to the story, specifically INACTIVITY.inactivity.jpg

In 2012, the Lancet, a leading expert on global health, announced physical inactivity is “a pandemic with far-reaching health, economic, environmental and social consequences.” Today, 28 percent of all Americans are totally sedentary: not active once in more than 100 activities tracked each year. This is up from 25 percent, just a few years ago. And, two-thirds of all Americans are not active to healthy standards. The biggest issue is with our children. Their inactivity rate is growing rapidly which, with other factors, means they will be the first generation who will not live as long as their parents.

Recently, there is more and more research showing inactivity is equally the cause of obesity and is far more important than being reported. Doctors and new research by universities and others are substantiating that activity has to be increased or we will not win the ‘battle of the bulge.’

There is an organization that wants to help companies which are being targeted. PHIT America (www.PHITAmerica.org) is a cause and campaign launched in 2013 to raise awareness of the OTHER major cause of obesity: INACTIVITY. PHIT America was launched with the support of 150 companies and organizations from the sports and fitness industry. Now, they are joined by local Ambassadors, Celebrities and a group of doctors – Doctors for a PHIT America – who believe ‘exercise is medicine.’

PHIT America’s mission is to increase the activity and fitness levels of all Americans for Total Health – Body, Mind and Spirit. That includes reducing obesity and the health care costs associated with this issue.

PHIT America has the solutions to the inactivity pandemic and a way to take the attention away from companies which are being wrongly and unfairly targeted. PHIT America has three major focal points:
  1. Comprehensive education and communication to Americans to increase awareness and the value of being active, fit and healthy.
  2. Increased physical education in schools and other grassroots activity based programming through a grants program. Research shows that when children have PE, it cuts inactivity levels of Americans in half and also gets them active outside of school.
  3. Support key pro-physical activity legislation that will increase active lifestyles and reduce health care costs.

Click on the Participate tab on www.PHITAmerica.org. Americans can search for the activity they want to participate in and find a location in their area.

One of the great benefits of physical activity and fitness are what they do beyond just getting the body in physical shape. New research shows a child who is more active is a better student as well. And, the benefits of being fit, playing sports and staying involved in physical activities help teach teamwork, how to overcome adversity and many other life skills.

PHIT America has the plan and formula to reduce inactivity and obesity. Again, PHIT America will increase the activity and fitness levels of all Americans for Total Health – Body, Mind and Spirit.
