Modern Day Blessings

5/9/2013
While unthinkably tragic, the Boston Marathon Bombing reminded us of just how connected we’ve become thanks to modern day technology. In a sad but true comparison, a recent article pointed out that on September 11, 2001, there was no Facebook or Twitter; no vehicle to deliver instantaneous messages other than e-mail. But when tragedy struck Boston, some amazing things transpired thanks to smartphones and social media. For one, Google.org quickly launched a “Person Finder” so that marathon participants and spectators could more easily reconnect. Boston locals opened up their homes to the stranded, listing personal info on a simple Google spreadsheet that went viral. In the mean time, the public’s photos and videos helped Botson police to identify, track and find the suspects. Police also used social networks to inform the public along the way, ending with a Tweet read around the nation: “Captured!” So while the digital age does present challenges, perhaps this new way of connecting should be considered more of a blessing than a curse. In this issue, you’ll hear from consumer goods leaders who are making meaningful connections and instilling comradery with modern day technology.
